Despite providing intensive treatment for three hours, a female elephant that was found lying in a farm near here died in the early hours of Saturday.

Veterinarians and forest officials lifted the animal using earth moving equipment to help it stand on its own legs. The weak animal walked a few yards towards the reserve forests and collapsed.

Local people found the sick elephant in the farm owned by Veerappan at Puliayampatti village in Oliyanuthu Reserve Forest on Friday and alerted forest officials.

A 10-year-old male calf that accompanied the elephant did not allow forest officials near its mother.
