The AIADMK on Sunday lauded the BJP and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and signalled that the parties could function as a “double-barrelled gun” in Indian politics.
An article published in the ruling party’s mouthpiece Namadhu Puratchi Thalaivi Amma on Sunday took a swipe at the DMK for its protests against the State and the Centre and said any number of protests would not sever the ties between the AIADMK and the BJP. “There are signs that the parties have started acting as a double-barrelled gun in Indian politics,” the report added.
When the Central and State governments were taking harmonious decisions over the Cauvery issue, the DMK was attempting to disturb the ties between the AIADMK and the BJP, it said. Attempting to list out the actions taken by the AIADMK government during Mr. Modi’s recent visit to Chennai, the article said “Were the opposition able to show black flags to the PM? Wasn’t it the State government that gave full security to him?” It justified the action as the best approach, the best achievement and best diplomacy.
“How can we forgive attempts [by the Opposition] to tarnish the image of the Prime Minister, whose leadership is looked at with awe by the entire world?” the article asked.
However, Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar attempted to play down the import of the article.
“The State government is maintaining cordial ties with the Central government so that many schemes can be implemented effectively,” the Minister told The Hindu.
As for political ties between the parties, Mr. Jayakumar said now was not the time to talk about such issues. “When the elections are around the corner, the party leadership will take a decision. It is too early to talk about elections and alliances now,” he said.
