The AIADMK middle-level leaders view the postponement of the party’s executive committee meeting, scheduled for Saturday, as “quite normal” and attribute it mainly to the need for a convenient date in the wake of the latest political developments at the national level.
On Monday, general secretary Jayalalithaa announced that the meeting was being put off.
“It is the prerogative of the general secretary to fix the date for convening the executive committee, which has to meet once in six months. The last meeting was held in December 2013, when the executive was held along with the general council, which must meet at least once in a year,” explains a senior office-bearer. The buzz now is that the executive might be convened in the first week of July, ahead of the Assembly session scheduled for July 10.
“There is no question of Amma suffering any setback in the foisted [disproportionate assets] case. Ultimately, truth will prevail and she will be absolved of the charges,” says another leader.
Before convening the executive, the Chief Minister would like to wait for the Centre to crystallise its stand on the formation of the Cauvery Management Board. It was significant when she said, replying to pleas from the Opposition for an all-party meeting on the issue, that the new regime needed to be given time, the functionary pointed out.
Likewise, there were issues such as nomination of a representative from the Central Water Commission on the Mullaperiyar Supervisory Committee, the plea for power allotment from the Central grid and the continued attack on fishermen by Sri Lanka. In all these issues, Ms. Jayalalithaa wanted to feel the pulse of the Centre before airing the party’s views. That explained the postponement, he clarified.
