Member of the Legislative Assembly belonging to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Om Sakthi Sekar, was arrested on Friday along with his supporters for allegedly preventing government officials from opening a cost price shop and staging ‘road roko.'
They were produced before Second Additional District Munsif Uthamraja, who also has additional charge of Judicial Magistrate, in the evening.
The court granted bail for all the arrested, Superintendent of Police (North) N. T. Sivadasan told The Hindu .
Cases have been registered under section 147 (punishment for rioting), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 353 (punishment for assault or use of criminal force to deter public servant from discharging duty) and 294 (punishment for obscene acts) of the Indian Penal Code.
The MLA and his supporters staged a demonstration in front of the cost price shop on Lenin Street, which comes under his constituency, to protest non-appointment of locals as employees in the outlet.
As the police intervened to allow the employees to open the shop, the group put up a strong resistance. They were immediately arrested.
To protest the arrest, Mr. Sekar's supporters squatted on the road near Nellithope. Traffic flow was disrupted for half-an-hour and the police used mild force to disperse the crowd.
