The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Monday demanded that the State be given full allocation of 2,000 megawatt (MW) of electricity from the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP).
A resolution, adopted at a meeting of the executive committee held at the party headquarters here, referred to Chief Minister and the AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa’s earlier appeal in this regard. The demand had been made considering the shortage of power in the State, constraints in transmission corridor and the delay in integrating the southern region with the rest of the country.
The meeting, which lasted about one and a half hours, assailed the Central government for, what it called, step-motherly treatment given to the State on the issue of reduction in the allocation of kerosene and stated that this attitude had affected severely the poor and rural people. It urged the Union government to provide 65,140 kilolitres of kerosene a month to the State.
Criticising the Central government for seeking to take away powers of States, the AIADMK wanted the Centre to refrain from framing laws on subjects of the Concurrent List without consulting States.
Demanding that members and officers of the Sri Lankan armed forces who were undergoing training at Wellington and Bangalore be sent back, the party called upon the Union government to bring to an end the programme of providing training to personnel of the Sri Lankan military.
The Centre should warn the Sri Lankan government not to resort to harassment of fishermen.
The party also condemned Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi for staging an act of farce by organising a meet on the protection of rights of Sri Lankan Tamils.
The party contended that Mr. Karunanidhi had lost his moral authority to raise the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils long ago.
Ms. Jayalalithaa, chairman of the party presidium E. Madhusudananan and Finance Minister-treasurer of the party O. Panneerselvam, were among those who participated in the meeting, which saw the adoption of 16 resolutions.
