Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) leader Vijayakant on Friday alleged that the AIADMK had indirectly helped DMK candidate Kanimozhi win the Rajya Sabha polls.

“The AIADMK could have easily defeated Ms Kanimozhi given the strength of its MLAs and its alliance partners in the Assembly. But the AIADMK leadership envious of the DMDK’s growth has helped DMK, an arch rival of AIADMK founder MGR,” Mr Vijayakant said in a statement.

He said the ruling AIADMK was more interested in who should be defeated than who should win the elections. “This is the reason behind Chief Minister Jayalalithaa withdrawing her party candidate in favour of CPI candidate D. Raja. This indirectly helped DMK candidate,” he said.

Mr Vijayakant said though the DMK and the AIADMK had given the impression that they were arch rivals, they chose to deliberately ignore each other’s commissions and omissions. “This has created a suspicion that both the parties are hand in glove,” he said.

The actor-turned-politician said his party had achieved real victory in the polls because it could ensure the participation of its MLAs-barring a few-in the election which witnessed contest, necessitating polling after a gap of 17 years.
