AIADMK failed to get CMB: Stalin

DMK working president M.K. Stalin on Sunday said the AIADMK government was responsible for the failure to get the Cauvery Management Board constituted even though it had 50 members in both Houses of Parliament.

Responding to Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s accusation that the review of the Cauvery water agreement in 1974 during the DMK regime resulted in Tamil Nadu losing its rights, Mr. Stalin said it was strange and contrary to truth.

Mr. Stalin said the Chief Minister sought to create an impression that the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal was created by the efforts of the AIADMK government though the demand was made by the DMK regime in 1969 itself.

“A resolution was adopted in the Tamil Nadu Assembly in 1971,” he said.

Karunanidhi’s plea

Recalling the developments that led to its constitution, he said since no breakthrough could be achieved despite 27 rounds of talks between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi prevailed upon the then Prime Minister V.P. Singh to set up the Cauvery Tribunal.

“He approached the Supreme Court and got a order that empowered the tribunal to deliver an interim order. But the AIADMK government led by Jayalalithaa never bothered to get the interim award implemented,” he said in a statement.
