December 06, 2013 03:51 pm | Updated 03:51 pm IST - Tirupur:

Members of various Hindu and Muslim outfits were arrested for staging agitations in the city on Friday — which marked the demolition anniversary of Babri Masjid.

India Tawheeth Jamath members were arrested when they staged a road-blockade agitation and attempted to block rail traffic. They wanted the entire accused involved in the demolition to be convicted, and demanded that steps be taken to return the disputed land to the Muslim community.

Hindu Makkal Katchi members were arrested when they tried to distribute sweets near the Collectorate in support of conducting rituals and prayers as per the Hindu tradition in the disputed land.

Hindu Munnani members were arrested when they tried to stage a demonstration near the Corporation office in support of a Hindu temple coming up in the place where the Masjid stood.

Stone pelting

A window pane of the bus which was used to transport the arrested Hindu Munnani members was damaged in alleged stone pelting. The Tirupur South police are investigating the incident.
