A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawan was arrested after he shot dead a contract workman of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation in front of Mine-II on Monday. In the subsequent violence, 18 policemen, including two DSPs and 26 NLC employees suffered injuries.

The jawan, Mohammad Nuwan from Bihar, was arrested for the murder of M. Selvam alias Raja (35).

The jawan, who was guarding the entrance to Mine II, reportedly fired three shots from a self-loading rifle into the back of Raja’s head.

It is stated that Raja, formerly employed as a contract workman in Mine I A, went to Mine-II to meet a friend. The altercation ensued as he sought to gain entry without a valid pass.

Employees of the Mine-II area rushed to the spot. After allegedly being lathi-charged by the CISF personnel, the workers pelted stones.

On information, police rushed to the spot and used baton and lobbed teargas shells to quell the unruly crowd.
