Advocates boycotted courts on Friday to press for dropping the 12 names recommended for the post of High Court Judges. This is the second time this month that advocates stayed away from courts in support of the demand, the earlier one being on January 8.
The Madras High Court Advocates’ Association had given the boycott call to emphasise that candidates for the post of Judges should possess honesty and integrity, competency and a high degree of professional skill. Selection from the bar for the post of Judges had been done without proper and effective consultation. Advocates staged a demonstration and took out a procession on the High Court premises.
Meanwhile, Justice C.S.Karnan submitted suggestions to the court in the matter of appointment of Judges.
He has said a meeting of office-bearers of various advocates’ associations should be held. Following this, a Full Court meeting should be conducted to seek the views of Judges. Later, the collegium may prepare a list. Till such time, the list sent in December last year may be recalled.
A writ petition against the list is already pending before the court.
In a press release here, the Dravidar Kazhagam leader, K.Veeramani, said that a demonstration would be held in the headquarters of districts on January 24, pressing the demand that there should be social justice in the appointment of judges.
