The Principal District and Sessions Court on Friday granted anticipatory bail to Tamil writer Puliyur Murugesan against whom a case was registered based on a complaint that a novel written by him contained certain derogatory references against a particular community.

While granting anticipatory bail, Principal District Judge M. Gunasekaran directed Murugesan to appear before the Chief Judicial Magistrate at Tuticorin within 15 days and sign there everyday until further orders.

The Tamil writer is at present undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital here after he was allegedly assaulted by members of a particular community to vent their ire against what they called derogatory references against their community in his novel, Balachandran Enra Peyarum Enakkundu .

The novel, which was released in December, caused uproar in the district with members of a Kongu Vellalar community staging road rokos and state transport corporation buses attacked recently. The Pasupathipalayam police booked a case against Murugesan a few days ago under various IPC sections including 505 (2) and 504 based on a complaint from the Puliyur Perunkudi Arakkatalai president. Murugesan had filed a petition seeking anticipatory bail before the Principal District and Sessions Court recently consequent to the registration of a case against him.
