The retrieved interceptor boat of Coastal Security Group (CSG) was towed into harbour and berthed at Tuticorin Old Port on Saturday.
The interceptor boat, which capsized and sank at midnight of March 11 owing to engine failure in rough sea, was retrieved around 4 p.m. on Friday. Additional Director General of Police, CSG, C. Sylendra Babu, inspected the boat weighing 12 tonnes at the port. The boat was lifted with the aid of a crane and placed on the surface for overhauling. Dr. Babu thanked Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus divers, fishermen of Manapad and Indian Coast Guard personnel, who were involved in the retrieval. A dedicated team from Mumbai would normally be involved in lifting such sunken boats. Since it was expensive to avail their services, the commandos were involved. The sunken boat was tied with eight tubes used in truck tyres, which were inflated to lift the boat up. The marine commandos took it as a challenge as the boat was considered precious for the CSG. Dr. Babu hoped that the retrieved boat with a capacity of 50 knots speed at sea, which was made in Greece, would be made operational after a thorough overhaul.
