While Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has sanctioned new trains for Tamil Nadu, she has not released adequate funds for various ongoing projects, especially gauge conversion works. As against Southern Railway’s demand for Rs.1600 crore, the Ministry has sanctioned only about Rs.1,000 crore. It has allotted Rs.280 crore for gauge conversion projects as against the demand for Rs.600 crore.

For new lines and doubling, about Rs.300 crore each has been sanctioned. More funds will be sought after exhausting the current allotment, according to a senior official of Southern Railway.
