Popular Tamil cinema actor Karthik, who heads the Ahila Indhiya Naadaalum Makkal Katchi, had approached the Congress party for a ticket to contest the Lok Sabha polls. While he had preferred the Madurai constituency, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) was not keen on changing the present candidate, Bharat Natchiappan, who is a relative of Union Minister Sudarsana Natchiappan.
According to sources, Mr. Karthik met TNCC president B.S. Gnanadesikan last week to convey his willingness to join hands with the Congress in the State.
While he initially did not mention any specific constituency as his preference, he is now vying for Madurai.
However, the TNCC had communicated to the high command that it may not be right to change Mr. Bharat as he had already hit the campaign trail in Madurai. On the other, Mr. Karthik could be offered the Chennai (South) seat for which the party was yet to nominate a contestant.
“If Mr. Karthik agrees, he could be given the seat immediately. But the sense we are getting is that he may not prefer it,” said a senior leader on condition of anonymity.
The other competitions for the Chennai (South) seat are long-timers C.K. Perumal and S.C. Ramani.
