Facing a fresh police case accusing them of involvement in an attack on a village panchayat president's husband and his elder brother, organisers of the protests against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) on Monday said they would approach the courts to get the “fake cases” quashed.
They denied any role in the incident in which Vijayapathi panchayat president's husband Sahayaraj and his elder brother Stalin were attacked by a group of people on Saturday night.
Speaking from Idinthakarai over phone, anti-KKNPP struggle committee member M. Pushparayan said none of the three (anti-KKNPP struggle committee convener S.P. Udayakumar, Rev. Fr. M.P. Jesuraj and Mr. Pushparayan, who are named in the FIR) had any role in the incident, as this was purely an issue between the panchayat and the villagers. The anti-KKNPP protesters were concentrating only on the core issue (of permanent closure of KKNPP).
However, some “forces” based outside Idinthakarai were making repeated attempts to file criminal cases against them.
“The Idinthakarai villagers suspect that the latest case (attempt to murder case) has been filed against us as some police officers are working against us,” according to Mr. Pushparayan.
He also said that they would approach the court to quash all the “false cases, including the latest criminal case, that have been filed against them”.
“The attempt being made to portray the People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) as a violent movement will not succeed,” Mr. Pushparayan said.
