Land grabbing cases cannot be described as vendetta politics, Chief Minister and All India Anna India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa said on Saturday.
Replying to a reporter's question on the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's criticism of the State government on the issue, Ms. Jayalalithaa, who earlier chaired meetings of her party executive and Members of Legislative Assembly of the AIADMK, said though complaints of land grabbing were made during the last five years, no action was taken by the previous DMK regime.
After the AIADMK government assumed charge, the number of complaints was “swelling day by day.”
On her instruction, special cells were created by the police all over the State. Even after that, the number of complaints was on the rise. This was why fast track courts had been formed to deal with the cases expeditiously.
“These are genuine complaints given by affected people. Most of the people have no political party affiliation. Therefore, there is no question of vendetta at all,” she asserted.
Ms. Jayalalithaa denied the charge that DMK treasurer M. K. Stalin was arrested during a protest near Tiruvarur.
Earlier, the party executive adopted several resolutions that included lauding the Election Commission for conducting free and fair elections in the State.
In another resolution, the party hailed Ms. Jayalalithaa for spearheading the AIADMK to an emphatic victory in the polls. A host of other resolutions also lauded her for the way she handled various issues including the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.
The party also urged the Centre to take immediate action on a memorandum given by Ms. Jayalalithaa to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in June.
It wanted the Union government to provide additional 1,000 megawatt from the Central pool to the State till May 2012 and notify the final verdict of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal in the Union government's gazette.
In total, the party executive adopted 25 resolutions.
