Hours after a murderous attack on a police team by a gang of chain snatchers in Hosur, C. Munusamy, a head constable, succumbed to stab injuries at a private hospital on Thursday.

The same day, one of the accused, Moorthy, died of sudden “chest pain” while in police custody.

According to the police, a team comprising head constable C. Munusamy, sub-inspector Nagaraj and another head constable Dhanapal was on duty at Bharathidasan Nagar in Hosur when a wireless message that a chain snatching gang was getting away after a strike came through.

The three-member gang was moving towards Hosur on a motorcycle after robbing a woman who was eight months pregnant.

When the police tried to nab them, they stabbed Munusamy and Nagaraj in the abdomen and Dhanapal in his palms.

Meanwhile, with the arrival of a support team, the police managed to apprehend Moorthy alias Bhujji, while the other two escaped. The injured policemen were rushed to a private hospital in Hosur where SI Nagaraj underwent two surgeries through the night. However, head constable Munusamy succumbed to injuries on Thursday. The condition of Nagaraj is said to be critical.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has announced a solatium of Rs. 5 lakh to the family of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 to the injured policemen.
