Due to laxity on the part of management in enforcing safety standards, the construction sector witnesses at least 10 to 15 accidents a month in the State, while it was the least in the industrial sector.

Talking to The Hindu, K. Ayyanu, Director of Industrial Safety and Health, said even though accidents could be averted to a great extent due to the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), workers were reluctant to wear helmets, gloves, shoes and reflective jackets as they found them inconvenient.

The management must ensure that workers used protective gear to avoid untoward incidents and reduce compensation claims.

Mr. Ayyanu said most accidents did not get reported and they came to know about them through the print and electronic media.

The department was conducting programmes on a regular basis about personal hygiene and safety. There was high level of awareness among industrial sector workers, and managements insisted on enforcing safety standards, he added. To sensitise workers, Chennai Regional Sub-committee of National Safety Council – Tamil Nadu Chapter conducted a training programme on ‘Importance of Personal Protective Equipment’ here on Friday.
