Academics stress on the need for quality publications

There is an urgent need for quality publications and procedures for measuring the same, said G. Valli, Vice-Chancellor, Mother Teresa University.

Dr. Valli was speaking at the inaugural of the international seminar on ‘Measurement of quality publications: issues, challenges and opportunities’ organised by the Department of Library and Information Science of the Periyar University here on Wednesday.

She highlighted the role of academic researchers in publication of different works.

C. Swaminathan, Vice-Chancellor, Periyar University, in his presidential address, gave a clarion call to the young scientists and researchers to be specific to societal issues. The purpose of research is to provide a plausible solution for the common man’s problems and researchers should bear this in mind, he said.

M. Jayaprakash, organising secretary of the seminar, and C. Murugan, Head of the Department of Library Information, spoke.

Resource persons Emmanuel Samson, Attache for Cooperation in French Language, Institute Francais en Inde, Embassy of France; Valentine Protte, Tutrice, France; S. Anandavadivelou, former president de Alliance Francais, Puducherry Union Territory; P. K. Madhavan, Publisher, Vijay Nicole Imprints; S. Saravanan, Head, Sona PAN; Rea Shivan, Coordinator, Campus France from France and India; addressing the sessions, highlighted the need for publication metrics, citation and journal impact factor.

S. Leela, Controller of Examinations, Periyar University, who spoke at the valedictory session, insisted on the quality of publications, the need for research cult, journal reputation and the originality of the research work.

More than 500 delegates from across the country participated in the seminar.
