Abandoned briefcase creates panic

August 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 29, 2016 12:23 pm IST - Bengaluru:

It was a scene straight out of a movie on the busy Mysuru Road on Thursday morning, with the emotions of the ‘actors’ seesawing between anxiety and fear, to ultimate relief.

It all started when a few passersby, spotting a briefcase lying abandoned near a nursing home in Byatarayanapura, panicked.

Once the police control room was informed, the police, who had stepped up vigilance in the wake of the execution of Mumbai serial blast convict Yakub Memon, cordoned off the area.

Summoned

The anti-sabotage squad was summoned, followed by the bomb detection squad and the dog squad. After a thorough check, they declared that there was no bomb in the briefcase.

A few documents, including copies of movie scripts, were all that were in it. The briefcase was finally traced to Kannada film director and actor S. Narayan. It had been stolen from his car at Vijayanagar when he visited a bank on Wednesday.

He had left his driver to guard it, but someone stole the briefcase containing Rs. 3.8 lakh in cash and documents by diverting the driver’s attention.

The police suspect the thief had abandoned the briefcase after pocketing the cash.

Documents

“We found some documents and an ID card, which confirmed that the briefcase belonged to Mr. Narayan. It was handed over to the Vijayanagar police for further investigations,” a senior officer said.

Mr. Narayan was not available for comments.
