Aavin gears up for festival season

It has been asked to come out with innovative milk products

September 20, 2014 02:10 am | Updated 02:10 am IST - Chennai:

With the festival season round the corner, Aavin, the apex cooperative milk producers federation in Tamil Nadu, has been asked to come out with innovative milk products that would catch the eyes of increasingly health-conscious urban consumers. The directive was given at a meeting chaired here on Friday by Dairy Development Minister B.V. Ramana, during which a review of major on-going milk augmentation programmes was done. He directed officials to take steps to expedite the projects.

More specifically, some of the projects in an advanced stage of implementation to help usher in the ‘second white revolution’ in the State, were discussed. For instance, with the trial run of the new Rs. 65-crore dairy plant in Tirunvannamalai district with a capacity to process two lakh litres daily and to make 20 tonnes of milk products, Mr. Ramana emphasised that the commercial production of the plant should commence soon.

The status of another dairy farm coming up at Padalur in Perambalur district at a cost of Rs.36.28 lakh was also reviewed, an official release said. The need for ensuring a fair deal to the milk producers under the cooperative fold and paying dairy farmers for the milk procured by the societies was also underscored at the meeting. The Commissioner for Dairy Development and Aavin Managing Director, Sunil Paliwal, was among the officials who participated.
