AAI asks Madras Flying Club to shift out of airport

August 18, 2010 12:35 am | Updated 12:35 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will take up the straightening of the taxi track ‘Bravo' and the building housing the Madras Flying Club and a portion of their hangar will be demolished.

At present work on a parallel taxi track on the western side of the main runway is in progress. Once that is completed the straightening of the ‘Bravo' taxi track would be taken up.

A senior AAI officer said in the existing taxi track, there are two bends one just behind the Air Traffic Control tower and another near the cargo aircraft parking area.

When the taxi track is straightened, it would pass through the Flying Club building and also a portion of its hangar.

The AAI had requested the Club to shift their training programmes to Vellore, where a small air strip was made available to them.

The increase in aircraft movement at the Chennai airport was also another reason for requesting the Club to shift their operations, the officer said.
