With an aim to improve the emergency medicine services at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) and the rest of Puducherry, the president and past president of the American Association for Emergency Medicine in India (AAEMI) are visiting.
Arriving in Puducherry on Sunday afternoon, President of AAEMI Pankaj Arora and immediate past president Anita Bhavnani will be in Puducherry for the next day-and-a-half to inspect the casualty department at JIPMER and help develop plans to improve it. Through this visit, JIPMER hopes to collaborate with the Global Academy of Emergency Medicine in order to improve emergency services in Puducherry as well as build capacity.
AAEMI will be working with JIPMER to help them develop the MD program in Emergency Medicine as well. Members from the AAEMI visit India once a month and they will be utilised to build capacity, Director of JIPMER Dr. Ravikumar said.
Medical tourism
As part of their visit, Dr. Arora and Dr. Bhavnani will also be calling on visiting the Tourism Minister, P. Rajavelu, on Monday. Speaking about the imminent visit, an official from the Tourism Department said that the minister would like to discuss possibilities for medical tourism. with the these doctors. With the arrival of the new airport, it was now possible for Puducherry to become a hub for medical tourism and therefore the Department wanted to discuss the ideas of exploring this venture further with the visiting doctors.
