Katherine Jackson, mother of Michael Jackson, unveiled a granite monument for her son at a memorial event held at 2300, Jackson Street, Gary, Indiana, in the U.S. on June 25, 2010, on the first death anniversary of the music icon.
The eight-foot-tall and two-and-a-half-tonne monument made of premium grade jet black granite was designed in India and made in the U.S. by Stone Plans, a company that has a granite quarry, factory and designing facility in India.
Senthil P. Muruganantham, chief executive officer of the company, told The Hindu here on Saturday that the granite monument was conceived and made in just 48 hours at the in-house facility of the company.
“I am a fan of Michael Jackson and that was one of the inspirations for this project,” he said.
“Our company makes granite memorials and monuments and as I watched the memorial service for the King of Pop last year, I thought it would be nice if we did something for him. We approached the Mayor of the city of Gary and in 48 hours we were able to coordinate and complete the monument,” he said.
Quarries
The company has quarries in India and China, a factory and designing facility near Coimbatore, and production facilities at Richmond in the United States.
The monument was conceived by three designers here and it was made using laser crafting technology by three craftsmen in the U.S.
Describing the monument, Mr. Senthil said the front side had a silhouette of Michael Jackson in the moonwalk pose against the backdrop of a full moon. At the back of the monument is a collage of photographs engraved in stone with the lyrics of “Gone too soon.”
A short biography is written on the monument in such a way that it forms an image of Michael Jackson's face.
