Shruti Shankar Kumar and Murali Sangeeth V. emerged winners of the 6th edition of the MS Subbulakshmi Award 2017 held on Sunday.
The event has been organised jointly by The Hindu and Sa Re Ga Ma in memory of the legend of Carnatic music.
The winners have an opportunity to bring out their own album by Sa Re Ga Ma.
The other finalists included Padmashree S., Mridula Aswin and Raghuveer Rangan. Musician Sudha Raghunathan, who judged the event with musicians K. Krishnakumar and S. Rajeswari, said, “I was reminiscing about the times I participated in competitions in the Academy. It was always a healthy, productive competition we had. It wasn't about winning, but of celebrating music.”
Musician K. Krishna Kumar said of nearly 80 entries, 20 people were shortlisted.
“Then, all 20 were called for a 15 minute performance and five finalists were chosen. These five were given their compositions just 20 minutes ahead of the competition. Instead of treating it like a competition, the participants should enjoy and celebrate music, that's what is important,” he said.
A book on M.S. Subbulakshmi was also released during the occasion.
Nalli Kuppusami Chetti also spoke at the event.
