A platform for women

July 23, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - HOSUR:

They were women from all walks of life; some have been active in public life, while others have been active in private spheres yet with a keen sense of the world.

When 185 of such women met for the first time, on the platform of “Women’s Empowerment Wing” of The People’s Society of Hosur (TPSOH) on Thursday evening, it was perhaps the mark of the beginning of a new adventure and experience for many.

They came responding to the call by the TPSOH to lend wings to its Women’s Empowerment Wing. “The aim was to create an exclusive platform for women, to raise issues that concern them and to evolve solutions on their own,” says Prasad, president, Hosur.

The society itself has been proactive, running civic initiatives with the motto of “no anger, no blaming, no shaming,” and instead on a positive participatory approach. And women have equally been active in the initiatives taken up by the society.

After a hard day’s work, when women turned in such huge numbers, there were expectations. A considerable number of women from Premier Mills, Bagalur, thronged the venue. “We got to meet women, who have silently been working and active in civic life here,” says Jaya Priya Sivaraman, who publishes a neighbourhood paper on behalf of the TPSOH.

There were women, who had organised campaigns in Hosur on social issues; and there were others who are spearheading garbage segregation in their neighbourhoods.

What the platform has done is to reveal the faces of these women and enable others to gain strength from each other’s experiences.

On Friday, barely hours after it met for the first time, the whatsapp group created in its wake is already buzzing with discussions, says “The first suggestion that has come is to enable proper parking spaces on the streets of Hosur,” says Ms.Jaya Priya.
