Preparedness is the best way to tackle natural disasters. This was the message delivered to residents of the coastal areas of Marakkanam through a field-level demonstration by fire personnel on Tuesday.

Collector V.Sampath organised the demonstration at Chettikuppam on the measures to be taken before and after a tsunami.

Station Fire Officer P. Nehru told the fishermen that people should get over the tendency of running towards the sea during any eventuality.

They should head towards land and move over to elevated and safer places, away from the shore. Thanks to satellite communications, the likelihood of a tsunami can be predicted and people living in vulnerable areas adequately forewarned, Mr. Nehru said.

“However, if disaster strikes at odd hours, there would be difficulty in mobilising relief workers in time. It is at this critical juncture that the coastal people should act with alacrity,” he said.

They should know how to rescue people caught under the debris of collapsed houses. People should also know how to carry the injured without aggravating their pain.

The Fire personnel showcased the techniques that helped them to carry the old and the injured with ease and comfort.
