Tirunelveli: Rajabunisha (28) of Surandai created a flutter on the Collectorate premises here on Monday after dousing herself with petrol and trying to set her on fire. However, the police personnel posted there prevented her attempt at self-immolation.

The woman said her five-year-old daughter was sexually abused by Jebaraj, a teacher of a private school in Surandai. A complaint was filed against him with Surandai police. The police arrested him, but he was let out on bail, she said.

She said Jebaraj was not booked under any punitive section. Hence, she demanded severe action against the teacher.

She said towards the end of December last year, her daughter suffered pain in lower abdomen. The doctors at Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital examined her and announced that she was sexually abused, Ms. Rajabunisha claimed.

The State’s health helpline 104 provides anti-suicide counselling and Chennai-based Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline is 044-24640050.
