Ramanathapuram: Two passengers were killed and 10 others injured when the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus, in which they were travelling, overturned at Papparkoottam near Nainarkoil on Sunday.

Police said the bus, plying between Paramakudi and Ramanathapuram via Deivipattinam, was proceeding towards the district headquarters in the evening when it overturned. Initial reports suggested that the accident occurred after the axle of the bus broke, the police said.

The deceased were identified as C. Arumugam (50) from Kaduarundakudi and N. Parvatham (55) from T Karikulam. The injured passengers were admitted to government hospitals at Paramakudi and Ramanathapuram.

Collector S. Natarajan visited the injured at the hospital here and directed the doctors to provide the best treatment. The driver of the bus fled the scene and was absconding, the police said.
