TIRUNELVELI: Tirunelveli Corporation has received the Centre’s ‘Best Corporation Award’ for implementing Swachh Bharat Mission by separately collecting nondegradable plastic waste on a dedicated day every week.

The urban civic body declared that its conservancy workers, during house visits on Wednesdays, would collect hazardous waste which should not be dumped along with degradable waste. In other words, the Corporation, by dedicating a particular day, effectively ensured ‘source segregation’ of nondegradable waste.

Since the introduction of the system on December 21 last year under ‘Litter-Free Tirunelveli’ Scheme, the Corporation has collected over 100 tonnes of plastic waste. This Wednesday, 10.24 tonnes of non-degradable waste was collected.

Lauding this efforts of the Corporation, Urban Development Ministry deputed a team of officials to study the success of the scheme. Subsequently, the ‘Best Corporation Award’ was given to Tirunelveli Corporation at a function held in New Delhi recently. Corporation Commissioner S. Sivasubramanian received the award from Praveen Prakash, Project Director, Ministry of Urban Development.

Congratulating the Corporation administration for bagging the award, Collector M. Karunakaran urged Mr. Sivasubramanian to execute the ongoing programme in a sustained manner so that the dream of ‘Plastic-free Nellai’ could be achieved.
