VELLORE: Two students of Government College of Education on Wednesday alleged that they were attacked by the college principal using a cutter. However, police said the principal had lodged a complaint stating that the duo manhandled him, and went on to hurt themselves using a blade.

Jagan, the student secretary of the college and Rajan, a student, had gone to the principal’s office along with three other students. The two of them were allowed to meet the principal in-charge, Parthiban.

“They had gone to get his permission to conduct Pongal celebrations in the college. The students had already complained about him to the Joint Director, Collector and Director of Collegiate Education regarding certain malpractices. Keeping this in mind, he had used inappropriate words, and this led to a heated argument,” P. Dileepan, district secretary of SFI said.

He added that during the argument, the principal attacked Rajan with a cutter, and inflicted four to five cuts on his hand. Jagan, who tried to stop him, sustained cut injuries on his throat and hand, he said.

The two were taken to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital for treatment.

P. Pakalavan, Superintendent of Police, Vellore, said the principal had lodged a complaint stating that the two students manhandled him and pushed him down. “They had asked permission to organise Pongal celebrations to which the principal said that there were practical examinations and asked them to organise later. He said he was manhandled and he rang the bell to alert the watchman. By then, they used a blade and inflicted injuries on themselves and ran out of the room,” he said.

The official said a CCTV camera was installed at the entrance to the principal’s room. “Footage shows the two students entering the room, and then shouting and running outside. We are conducting inquiry with the students,” he said.
