Sri Lankan Navy destroys fishing nets of Kottaipattinam fishermen

The Sri Lankan Navy reportedly opened fire in the air in the early hours on Tuesday and destroyed the fishing nets and the fish catch of the four mechanised boats off Kottaipattinam coast in Pudukottai district.

A senior official of the Fisheries department told The Hindu that 12 fishermen of Kottaipattinam coast ventured into the sea in four mechanised boats on Monday morning and the incident occurred while they were fishing in the early hours on Tuesday.

The official pointed out that the fishermen who reached the shore in their boats said that the Sri Lankan navy warned the fishermen after destroying the nets and throwing away their catch in the sea. However, the boats were not damaged in the incident.

The fishermen after reaching the shore narrated the incident to the officials of the Fisheries department who recorded their statement to file a formal complaint with the police.
