Motorists can expect to get a major relief from traffic congestions in Tirupur city and its surrounding areas as the widening of 31.8 km Avinashi- Avinashipalayam (via Tirupur city) stretch, which is recently elevated as NH- 381, is set to begin shortly.

The project to widen the sector for facilitating four-lane traffic, will be carried out at an outlay of Rs 162.7 crore allocated by the Union Government.

National Highways (state wing) Department sources told The Hindu that the project execution and maintenance contract had been awarded to a Chennai-based company.

“The project will be carried out on Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Model by which the contract company has been asked to complete the project within two years and carry out any maintenance works required for the next four years”, said the officials.

As part of the project, widening will be carried out in such a manner without to ensure a total riding surface of seven metres each on both sides of the dividers.

Only exception will be for a 200 metre stretch near Tirupur South police station where only 5.5 metres riding surface on both sides of the divider could be set up due to space constraints. Paved shoulders will also be erected on both sides of the roads wherever it is feasible.

No land acquisition was needed for the project.

Officials said that eight of the 36 culverts situated between Avinashi and Avinashipalayam would be demolished to pave way for new ones. The three bridges in the sector, situated near Tirupur railway station, Thirumuruganpoondi and across Sangalipallam Odai, would be maintained as such.

Sources clarified that there would only one toll collection point, which would be near Avinashipalayam, and the Government would directly collect the toll from the vehicles.
