Sasikala, Ilavarasi, Sudhakaran sent to jail; Jayakumar claims support of 124 MLAs for Edappadi.

A day after V.K. Sasikala put in place a plan of succession by getting PWD Minister Edappadi K. Palanaswami, as the leader of the AIADMK Legislative Party,  she re-admitted her nephews TTV Dinakaran and Venkatesan,  into the party. Read more

Both her nephews were expelled from the party by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in 2011. Rejecting her plea to be allowed some time before surrendering to serve her sentence, the Supreme Court asked her to surrender immediately.

Here are the latest developments.

9.10 pm:

Panneerselvam’s meeting with Governor concludes. Minister Paniarajan, MP Maitreyan accompany him.

8.25 pm:

Edappadi Palaniswami’s meeting with Governor concludes. Minister Jayakumar, who accompanied Mr. Palaniswami, says after the meeting that they have the support of 124 MLAs.

 

8.05 pm:

Edappadi Palaniswami arrives at the Raj Bhavan. Ten Minister accompany him.  Panneerselvam is scheduled to meet the Governor at about 8.30 pm.

 

8 pm:

Sasikala has been allotted prisoner number 3295, Ilavarasi 3296. They will be given a plate, a tumbler, and blanket and a list of jobs they would be interested in. They will have to work to earn their livelihood inside the prison during their stay and they can collect their earnings after their release, officials add. Sudhakaran  is alloted prisoner number 3297.

On the crisis in forming a government in Tamil Nadu, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley says, "I think it's an internal issue of the ruling party in Tamil Nadu and I am sure in accordance with constitutional norms the governor will decide and decide very soon."

Sources in Raj Bhavan confirm that Mr. Palaniswami will be meeting the Governor at 7.30 p.m. Mr. Panneerselvam is set to meet the Governor at 8.30 p.m.

Sasikala and Ilavarasi have been sent to jail after their surrender before sessions judge Ashwath Narayana at the Parappana Agrahara jail complex, Tamil news channels report. The third convict V. N. Sudhakaran too is to surrender before the special court as the judge has rejected his request to surrender tomorrow.

It is not fair for the Governor to delay the swearing-in of Edappadi Palaniswami as the new Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, says Rajya Sabha MP Navaneethakrishnan.

This delay is a big injustice to Tamil people, he adds.

On Mr. Dinakaran being made the de-facto chief of AIADMK, Mr. Navaneethakrishnan says, "Rich experience of TTV Dinakaran can be used to develop the party. It is the best choice.

5:40 pm

Minutes after Sasikala and Ilavarasi surrendered, vehicles with Tamil Nadu registration were attacked by some unidentified people, reports Vivek Narayanan.

Sasikala's advocate's car was also attacked. Police had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the attackers. A police investigation is on.

Sasikala was accompanied by her relatives and party functionaries from Chennai. She had to travel by road as the runway in Bengaluru airport was closed for carriers today due to the Aero Show.

Sasikala surrenders before a special court at Parappana Agrahara in Bengaluru. Co-convict J. Ilavarasi too surrenders. There are no immediate reports about the third convict and Jayalalithaa’s erstwhile foster son V.N. Sudhakaran.

4.30 pm

As Sasikala is on her way to Bengaluru, her husband M. Natarajan, Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M. Thambidurai and Karnataka AIADMK secretary V.  Pugazhendi have arrived at Parappana Agrahara.

2.55 pm:

PTI reports: Sasikala and Mr. Palaniswami have been booked for alleged detention of AIADMK MLAs on a complaint from an MLA with the Panneerselvam camp.

Based on a complaint filed by Madurai South MLA, Saravanan (who escaped from resort and now in Panneerselvam camp), police conducted an enquiry at Golden Bay Resort, says Inbadurai, Radhapuram MLA (Sasikala camp).

Court hall for Sasikala’s surrender shifted to central prison, reports PTI

The court hall where AIADMK General Secretary V K Sasikala is to surrender today has been shifted to the central jail at Parapppana Agrahara due to security reasons.

The Karnataka High Court Registrar accepted a request by Bengaluru City Police to shift the court hall in the city citing security and other considerations, official sources said.

Madhusudhanan says appointment of Sasikala's nephew T.T.V. Dinakaran as deputy general secretary is "illegal."

In an interview to The Hindu , Mr. Madhusudhanan said as per the AIADMK's party bye-laws set down by MGR, "only a person who has been a member of the party for five continuous years can hold any post in the party.”

As the first sign of rebellion against the appointment of TTV Dinakaran as party's Deputy General Secretary, AIADMK Organising Secretary V. Karuppasamy Pandian quits.

Mr. Pandian says he has been forced to take the step as Mr. Dinakaran, who was removed from the party by Jayalalithaa, was made the Deputy General Secretary of the party.

He alleges Sasikala had transformed the party into their family property.

Mr. Pandian was made the Organising Secretary only three weeks back.

Sasikala is expected to surrender at the Parappana Agrahara jail in Bengaluru where she and Jayalalithaa were incarcerated in 2014 when they were convicted by a special court in the disproportionate assets case.

Security has been increased at the city civil court but not much outside Parappana jail. Police say that last time barricades were placed several hours before Jayalalitha's arrival. Slowly, Sasikala's supporters have started coming down. "We are checking with our cadres in Poes garden to see if she has started," says Kathir, a supporter in Bengaluru. Some of them will be going to the border to accompany her.

The Supreme Court refuses to entertain a plea of V K Sasikala seeking time to surrender for serving her jail term in the DA case. Dinakaran is Sasikala's deputy

Sasikala readmits T.T.V. Dinakaran and Venkatesan, her nephews, into the AIADMK. T.T.V. Dinakaran is appointed AIADMK deputy general secretary. Both of them were expelled from the party by Jayalalithaa in 2011.

According to party sources, the deputy general secretary will enjoy the powers of the general secretary of the party.

Elambai Tamilselvan, Perambalur MLA, says 125 MLAs are at Golden Bay resort. "We are free. Will vacate the resort once the Governor calls us", he said.

Sevvoor S.Ramachandran, Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, says he is safe and free at Golden Bay Resorts.  He denied rumours that he tried to escape from resort.
