: The Madras High Court has directed the State government to file the draft rules governing the appointment of law officers within 10 days, failing which the amicus curie appointed for the purpose would proceed, ignoring the suggestions from the government.

The First Bench of Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice M. Sundar passed the order terming it as the “last opportunity”.

“The Advocate General states that the rules are still in process; we find that this process has been going on for quite some months, and at his request, we grant the last opportunity to file the draft rules and hand over the copies to the amicus curie within 10 days, failing which the amicus shall proceed to suggest the rules, ignoring the contribution which the State government wanted to give, but have not given till date,” the Bench said.

The issue pertains to a PIL moved by advocate Vasanthakumar seeking a direction to the State government to frame rules and guidelines for the appointment of law officers in line with the Supreme Court directions.
