TIRUNELVELI: Condemning the recent attacks on journalists by antisocial elements and during the pro-jallikattu protests at Alanganallur, 53 members of Nellai Press Club attempted to lay siege to the office of the Deputy Inspector General of Police here on Thursday and courted arrest.

The protesters said satellite television channel reporter Chandran was recently stabbed with lethal weapons by ganja peddlers and drug addicts in Madurai for having informed the police about the problems being created by them in the locality.

While antisocials were targeting journalists for exposing their nefarious activities, the “highhandedness” of the police had become a stumbling block when reporters were discharging their duties. Besides assaulting the cameraman of a satellite television channel even as he was covering the pro-jallikattu protests at Alanganallur recently, the police also damaged his camera, the protesters charged.

When the protesting reporters tried to reach the DIG’s office, they were stopped and arrested. They were released in the evening.
