Ramanathapuram: A day after a spotted deer died after being hit by a vehicle in Sayalkudi area, forest personnel rescued a two-year-old spotted deer at Kumbidumadurai near Kilakarai after it sustained injuries while trying to jump over a wire fence.
After local people alerted the forest personnel around 6.30 a.m. on Thursday, a team, led by Range Officer S. Sikkandar Batcha and comprising Forester L. Innacimuthu and Forest Guard V. Rajendran, rescued the deer and got it treated by an Assistant Veterinary surgeon.
The female deer could have strayed from Rajakkalpalayam area in search of water and got injured while trying to jump over the fence. As it repeatedly tried to jump over the fence, it suffered bleeding injuries in the lower jaw and looked exhausted, Mr. Batcha said.
Before bringing the animal to the range office, the personnel provided first aid at the veterinary hospital. Later, the Assistant Veterinary Surgeon examined the deer and treated it, he said.
As the deer could not chew anything, the forest personnel fed it with glucose and other liquid food. After about eight hours, the deer was able to stand up in the evening, Mr. Batcha said.
As it could be attacked and hunted by predators, the deer would be released into the forest area only after it recovered fully. Till then, it would be under their care, he added.
