Ensuring jallikattu with safety arrangements
MADURAI : Amidst opposition from the protesters seeking permanent solution to the jallikattu issue, Madurai district Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao on Saturday announced the traditional sport would be held at Alanganallur from 10.30 a.m. on Sunday.
After a consultation with officials and members of Alanganallur jallikattu committee, Mr. Rao said that an eight-foot double barricade would be erected around the jallikattu arena as a safety feature.
Registration of bulls would begin at night and the event will last long as long as the last bull is released through vadivasal , he said.
“Every bull will undergo a thorough medical test by 17 teams of veterinary doctors from the Department of Animal Husbandry. Their health status will be certified before they are let into the arena,” he said. All efforts would be taken to ensure that the animals are not be subjected to cruelty.
The entire event would be closely monitored by representatives of Animal Welfare Board of India.
Jallikattu will be held at Avaniapuram on January 25 and on a date convenient to the village committee at Palamedu, he said.
The Collector and Superintendent of Police, Vijayendra Bidari, visited Alanganallur on Saturday evening.
