The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) on Thursday said it has served closure orders on 92 illegal packaged drinking units functioning around the city.
The National Green Tribunal Bench comprising Justice M.Chockalingam and Prof.R.Nagendran was hearing a case it had taken up on its own based on a news item in The Hindu revealing certain violations by the packaged drinking units.
At the last hearing on Tuesday, the Bench expressed its displeasure over the TNPCB’s failure to take action against illegal units and asked its member-secretary to provide an explanation.
When the matter came up for hearing before the Bench on Thursday, S.Saravanan, counsel for the TNPCB, submitted that only 25 units had obtained consent, while 96 units were functioning without consent. Four units shut down on their own.
Closure orders were issued to 92 units and communicated to the TNEB to disconnect power supply.
Adjourning the case to Friday for further hearing, the Bench asked the TNPCB to submit an action taken report.
