The first phase of campus recruitment at IIT-Madras ended on Friday with a total of 880 of the 1,360 students taking up job offers from around 295 companies.

The institute has recorded several firsts this year. For the first time, 65 start-ups, many of them launched by “alumni from one or the other IITs,” offered 77 profiles and made 122 offers. As many as 114 offers were accepted. This year, 13 per cent of jobs were in the R&D sector in companies such as GE, Rolls Royce, Honeywell, TVS, Robert Bosch, TCS and Infosys. Last year, it was only two per cent.

From this year, the IIT-M is surveying separately the number of girls opting for placement. Among those who registered for placement, 14.5 per cent were girls and 16 per cent of those placed were girls.

Three students received an offer of $1,29,500 each as annual pay and two students received the highest domestic salary package of Rs.34 lakh per annum. One of the five students in this segment was a girl, said Babu Viswanathan, adviser, training and placement.

As many as 75 students got multiple offers. While one student received five offers, four students got offers from four companies; nine were given placements by three companies each; and 61 students received two offers each. “Once a student is placed, he is deregistered. This helps to give other students equal opportunities,” Mr. Viswanathan said.

The highest percentage of placement at 92 was registered by MBA students, followed by dual degree candidates (84%). Job offers from core engineering companies accounted for 27 per cent against 16 per cent for analytics, consulting and finance sectors. The number of recruitments by IT companies remained the same as last year at 17 per cent.

Cognizant Technology picked up 36 students, while Ola Cabs recruited 29 students. Flipkart and Robert Bosch selected 19 and 16 students respectively. The next phase will begin on January 18, 2015.
