85 acres acquired for fisheries varsity

The State government has acquired land for the construction of buildings for Fisheries University on 85 acres of land at Panankudi and Nagore villages, said Fisheries Minister K.A. Jayapal. Inaugurating a two-day photo exhibition organised by the Information and Public Relations Department at Auri Thidal near new bus stand here on Tuesday, the Minister said the university offers degree and diploma courses related to prawn-rearing and maintenance of fishing vessels and related accessories. It has been decided to upgrade Nagapattinam Government Headquarters Hospital on par with the standards of medical college hospital. The government has allocated Rs. 1,200 crore for the construction of check dams, channels, and drains to ensure regular supply of water for irrigation as well as to distribute potable water to the people of the district. Moreover, Rs. 600 crore had been allocated for the construction of tail end barrage in the district. The Government has allocated Rs. 79.40 crore for the construction of bridge at Nagapattinam to ease traffic congestion in the town, said the Minister.

The Collector, S.Palanisamy, said the government had been implementing various welfare and development activities for the benefit of people of the tail end area of delta region. He appealed to the people to avail all benefits announced by the government by approaching the officials of department concerned.

Later, the Minister inaugurated the e-governance kiosk at Nagapattinam taluk office on Tuesday.
