8 held for conducting kangaroo courts

The police arrested eight persons of Puzhuthakarai village near Krishnapuram on Tuesday for allegedly organising kangaroo courts. The arrested persons were part of a gang of 20 persons.

The personnel in the District Police Office here said recently there was a dispute between G. Kaliappan (55) and Sarala of the same village. The two abused each other on the streets and the issue was taken to the kangaroo court about four days ago. The persons who headed the court imposed a fine on both of them, which was opposed by Kaliappan. The elders joined hands and threatened to lodge a police complaint against him if he did not pay Rs. 5,000 to them”, the police said. He paid the money on Tuesday morning and lodged a complaint with Krishnapuram Police.
