The 77-year-old Kamban Kazhagam, launched by eminent Tamil scholar Sa. Ganesan, has taken a ‘new avtar’ with the registration of the Kazhagam as a society and Tamil scholars taking over the functioning to further promote the cause of Tamil and the Ramayanam of Mahakavi Kamban.
Announcing this at a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr Pala Palaniappan, secretary of the Kazhagam, said the Kamban Kazhagam, which had been functioning as an unregistered body all these years, was registered as a society for the first time since it was formed by Mr. Ganesan in 1939. Ms. Valli Muthaiah from the family of philanthropist Alagappa Chettiyar has taken over as the new President of the Kazhagam and senior advocates and Tamil scholars T Ramalingam and ARV Manickavelu as Vice Presidents, he said.
While he continued to be the Secretary of the Kazhagam after its registration as a society, Prof C Sethupathy would function as Joint secretary and Prof M. Palaniappan as Treasurer, he said.
Prof Senthamizh Pavai, Prof M Chidambaram, Mr Subramaniam, a relative of Mr. Ganesan and Ms Arivu Selvi Stephen were appointed as executive committee members, he said.
The new body has proposed to organise the third international conference on the Kamba Ramayanam in the Andaman islands and Hong Kong next year, he said, adding one aspect of the epic would be held in the Andaman islands and another in Hong Kong.

Mr. Palaniappan said the founder’s day celebration would be organised this year at the Krishna Kalyanaa Mandapam here on July 28 as the Kamban Manimandapam premises is being used for running a school.
