Seventy per cent of funds under MPLADS ( Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme) have already been pumped into various projects in the State , said A.K.S. Vijayan, MP, Nagapattinam, and head of the visiting Parliamentary Committee here on Thursday.
The allocation for Tamil Nadu stood at Rs.477 crore and works to the tune of Rs.363 crores are underway.
The assessment was made by the 5-member Central team that arrived here to gauge the works done under MPLADS in the district.
About Rs.6,475 crores have been allocated for various projects throughout the country under the scheme and Rs. 4,526-crores worth projects are at various stages of completion.
Of the major works taken up in the district under MPLADS, the Rs.30-lakhs bridge work across river Narimeni at Thiruchenkaatankudi and the Rs.10-lakhs bus shelter work at Thittacherry were inspected by the team. The team also assessed the erection of high mast lights at Vanjoor at a cost of Rs.7 lakhs.
A newly-constructed bus shelter at Paapakoil and a fair price shop at Velankanni were also inaugurated by the team. Taking stock of the market building works at Paravai and the surplus drain water project at Nariyakudi, the team directed officials to expedite the works.
Mr.Vijayan said that the visits were aimed at gauging the extent and quality of works done under the scheme. About 75 per cent of the works were completed, he said. S.D.Shariq and Raghuveer Singh Meena, MPs; Davendra Verma, Joint Secretary, and Mini Prasanna Kumar, Deputy Director, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, and Collector T.Munusamy were present.
