Seven persons of a same family, including four women and two children, were killed when their Sports Utility Vehicle rammed a tree here in Singarapettai in Uthangarai at dawn on Sunday.
The family, hailing from Thirupathur, was travelling from Omakkupam in Vaniyambadi to Tiruvannamalai via Uthangarai here. The vehicle carrying eight passengers, including the driver, is reported to have lost control and rammed a banyan tree at Kurangukalmedu.
The victims, G. Wilson Mohandas (55), Wilson’s mother Susila Bai (70), his wife Regina Mary (40), his sisters Jhansi (45), Selvi (57), and children Joyal (7) and Janika (5) were killed on the spot. The driver, Dilip Kumar (28), a resident of Villivakkam in Chennai, has been referred to a private hospital with critical injuries.
According to the police, Wilson Mohandas was employed in a cooperative society in Vaniyambadi, while his wife Regina Mary was a government school teacher. The police have filed a case against the driver.
