₹656-cr. water supply scheme to be operational in a month

TWAD has started supplying water to Natham, 170 rural habitations

The much-awaited ₹656-crore Comprehensive Water Supply Scheme (CWSS) meant for Natham, Ammaiyanaickanur and Nilakottai town panchayats would become fully operational within a month. After trial run of part of the scheme, TWAD had started supplying water to Natham and 170 rural habitations, said Collector T.G. Vinay.

After inspecting the project at Pudhupalayam, Mayanur and Kottaikaranpatti in Karur district on Tuesday, he said two of the three collector wells, planned with a capacity of 48.1 million litres, had been constructed near Mayanur barrage. Finishing touches were being given to the third well and a foot bridge. Pipe laying work was also in progress, he added.

Construction of booster stations at Thirukampuliyur, Kottaikaranpatti, Gujiliamparai, Kovilur, Vadamdurai and Reddiyarchatram and intermediate stations at vantage points was over. Besides, 99 sumps were constructed to supply water to Natham and 631 habitations. Main pipe laying work and construction of service reservoirs and distribution pipelines were also over. Power supply had been obtained for operating pumping motors at 83 of the 87 places, he added.

Already, water supply to 170 habitations was tested. Trial run for the remaining 66 sumps and 461 habitations would be completed before May 15. Regular water supply for remaining areas would commence after obtaining power supply and completing trial run, said TWAD Executive Engineer R. Prabhu Ram.

The scheme would also cover Neikarapatti, Keeranur town panchayats, 354 habitations in Palani and Thoppampatti unions, 152 in Athoor, 136 in Nilakottai, 99 in Batlagundu, 63 in Oddanchatram, 38 in Reddiyarchatram, 51 in Sanarpatti, 40 in Gujiliamparai, 84 in Vedasandur and 20 in Vadamadurai unions, said Assistant Executive Engineer Mohammad Farook.

He said this project would augment water supply to five town panchayts in Dindigul district and 1,765 habitations – 1,630 in Dindigul district and 135 in Tiruchi district.

The Collector also inspected booster stations at Thirukampuliyur, Kottakaranpatti and Gujiliamparai, Kovilur, Vadamadurai, Natham and Sanarpatti unions and asked the officials to complete the project before mid-May to augment water supply.
