Chief Minister N. Rangasamy announced that as many as 650 retrenched workers would be reinstated in October.
Making a slew of announcements in a hurriedly-convened press conference at the Commercial Tax Office here on Saturday, he said that as per the promise made by him on floor of the Assembly, it had been decided to accommodate as many as possible workers in their respective positions.
In the first phase, 600 workers of Public Works Department (PWD) and 50 workers of veterinary college would be accommodated immediately. Steps would be taken to reinstate remaining workers.
On supply of single boiled rice, Mr. Rangasamy said that all ration cards in the Union Territory would be given 10 kg of rice free of cost from October. Officials were instructed to take steps to implement the plan. Quality rice would be supplied to card holders every month.
Similarly, long-pending dues of financial assistance to CENTAC students studying in medical colleges would be dispersed to their respective accounts by October. Besides dispersing assistance for the current academic year, the dues related to 2011-12, 2012-13 would also be settled.
Stating that financial situation had been showing signs of recovery, the Chief Minister said he announced all these schemes only after identifying resources. In addition to the above schemes, steps have been taken to distribute first and second instalments to beneficiaries of Kamarajar Housing Scheme, which was stalled for a few years owing to complaints. Since an inquiry was completed, it had been decided to restart the scheme. A sum of Rs.70 crore was allotted for the scheme.
After the distribution process, government assistance to the scheme would be enhanced to Rs.2 lakh from Rs.1 lakh. Process of identifying beneficiaries was under way.
Mr. Rangasamy said that as many as 1,746 houses had already been constructed under the Adi Dravidar Housing Scheme. They would be formally handed over to beneficiaries shortly. Similarly, government assistance for the scheme would be enhanced from Rs.2 lakh to Rs. 4 lakh per house. As many as 4,000 families of Scheduled Caste would benefit from the scheme.
