With work to revive 34 tanks in the first phase of ‘Kudimaramathu’ scheme progressing in Vellore district, another 55 tanks will be rejuvenated in the second phase at a cost of ₹10 crore.

In a press release, Collector S.A. Raman said that works were under way to revive 34 tanks across the district at a cost of ₹ 3 crore.

The works included removing bushes grown on the bunds and inside the tanks, filling up of craters and strengthening of bunds, desilting of 16 km of inflow canals and erecting border stones.

Assured source of water

By breathing life into these 34 tanks, steps were being taken to create an assured source of water for irrigating 2,248 hectares of lands. This will help in improving the groundwater table in the surrounding areas.

As of now, the scheme works have been completed at Payanur tank in Arakkonam. Work on the remaining tanks would be completed by the end of June, he added.

He pointed out that the State government brought in the “Kudimaramathu” scheme to protect and improve water bodies in the State.

On Wednesday, the Collector reviewed the ongoing works at Thimmanacharikuppam tank in Melakuppam village in Walajah taluk.
