The Chittoor East police on Friday night nabbed five red sanders smugglers from Vellore and Tirupattur districts of Tamil Nadu on the outskirts of Chittoor, and seized red sanders logs worth about ₹10 lakh, and an SUV, when they were on the way to Bengaluru.

The police on Saturday produced the accused along with the seizures at a press conference at Taluq police station. The officials said that the police at Murakambattu-Bengaluru bypass road on the outskirts of Chittoor spotted the SUV parked on the roadside, while the inmates were hanging around suspiciously. On seeing the police, three of them tried to flee, but were captured. In the meantime, two others got into the SUV and tried to escape.

The names of the accused were given as Rajesh, Ramesh, Elumalai Manikyam and Bharani (all in their 20s).

Superintendent of Police G. Srinivas announced rewards for policemen who led the operation.
