Five locations have been identified at Sankagiri near here for constructing a memorial for the 18th century freedom fighter Dheeran Chinnamalai.

The locations would be submitted to the government for consideration. The Chief Minister would decide the final location, said Minister for Highways and Minor Ports Edapadi K. Palanisamy and Industries Minister P. Thangamani on Sunday after inspecting the locations.

Based on the request made by Ms. Vijayalakshmi Palanisamy, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had on April 4 announced in the Assembly that a memorial would be constructed for Dheeran Chinnamalai at Sankagiri Fort, where he was hanged by the British on July 31, 1805.

Born on April 17, 1756 in Melapalayam in Erode district, he revolted against the British East India Company and had fought many battles.

A manimandapam was constructed for him at Odanilai village near Arachalur in Erode district and a commemorative stamp was released by the Central government in July 2005.

The Ministers held discussions with officials concerned.

MLAs P. Vijayalakshmi Palanisamy, M.K. Selvaraju, C. Krishnan, G. Venkatachalam and the District Collector K. Maharabushanam were present during the discussion.
